BA in Communication Arts
CORPORATE COMMUNICATION, MEDIA COMMUNICATION
Programme Description (What is communication Arts?)
Interpersonal, intercultural and international *communication skills* are
some of the most essential skills necessary for personal and professional
success in any work environment. In the last fifty years, the increase of
vast amount of information on the Internet and cable television, along with
the restructuring of businesses into work groups, and the growth of service
industries have forever changed the way we think, work and interact with the
world.
*COMMUNICATION ARTS* is the convergence of a broad range of creative and
technical disciplines – the combination of written text, spoken language,
still image, moving images, video and interactivity to produce an enormous
range of new media forms, both verbal and visual.
The Bachelor of Arts in Communication Arts at Asian University is designed
to produce graduates who have theoretical knowledge and practical ability in
many types of communication as well as design and technical skills to make
valuable contributions to many fields of business, government agencies,
civil organizations, and entertainment.
Students achieve this through a variety of experiences ranging from
classroom discussions to workshops, small group projects, and independent
projects so that all aspects of verbal and visual communication are
mastered.
For students who enjoy working with verbal media (written and spoken words),
the *Corporate Communication Focus* provides analytical skills and creative
opportunities focusing on oral and written communications within a business
setting. This Focus also encourages students to take additional courses
which deal with visual elements.
For students who enjoy working with visual media (imagery), the *Media
Communication Focus* provides analytical skills and creative opportunities
focusing on print and digital communication within a business setting. This
Focus also encourages students to take additional courses which deal with
verbal elements.
The programme encourages students to become critical thinkers as well as
effective and creative communicators in a business environment whether it is
on a local, national and international level.
The curriculum can be customized to the individual strengths and interests
of students with courses such as Intercultural Communication, Negotiating
Skills, Writing for the Internet, Business Presentation Skills, Typography,
Business Report Writing, Photography, Animation, Making Documentaries,
Communication Law, and Contemporary Journalistic Writing.
PROGRAMME DESIGN
The programme is designed so that all Communication Arts students take many
of the same Core subjects throughout their four years. *All students take
exactly* *the same subjects during the first year.* This design provides
students with a thorough grounding of essential communication skills and
theory. It also gives them time to decide whether they wish to follow the
Corporate Communication Focus (an emphasis on verbal communication) or the
Media Communication Focus (an emphasis on visual communication) or a
combination of the two.
During the second, third and fourth years students take more specialized
courses in their Focus Subjects but still have the opportunity to take other
courses which interest them in their Elective Subjects.
