BRIEF COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

LID601 Use qualities of interaction design 3(3-0-6)
This course looks at interaction design in terms of its qualities of use. Such qualities provide a framework or language in which to talk about interaction design more critically.

LID602 Research methods in interaction design 3(2-2-5)
This course will present an opportunity to examine and discover research methods currently employed by the design professions, and to understand the conceptual foundation of research methodology.

LID701 Social impact of technology 3(3-0-6)
The use of information technology can be seen in all aspects of society. It has become ubiquitous to the point where we don't know it is there, or how dependent we are upon it. The design of information technology requires socio-ethic perspectives on identity and culture, glocalization, security, corporate manipulation, protection of ideas, and environmental issues ...

LID702 Interaction design methods 3(2-2-5)
The course includes problem framing, ideation, concept development and iteration. The role of visual description through drawing, prototyping, wireframing, modelling, photography, video sketching and diagramming is also investigated.

LID610 Studio #1 Technology as product 3(1-4-4)
Learning by doing, studio based work is focused on design projects, undertaken individually or in groups. Projects focus on developing new services and products, and considering how they might contribute to existing social, economic and technological systems.

LID620 Studio #2 Technology as medium 3(1-4-4)
Continuing from Studio Practice #1, this project-based course encourages students to explore the aesthetic and functional potential of new technology by experimenting with the various channels in a critical, theoretical and analytical way.

LID801 Thesis essay 18 Credits
Students propose a written thesis topic to be carried out over at least one year. Students also identify one or more faculty members to serve as theses advisors, who will monitor progress on the essay throughout the year. The completed work must be submitted as a bound written thesis of a recommended length of between 12,000 and 15,000 words along with a published short paper publicly presented.

LID802 Thesis project 18 Credits
The thesis project gives students the opportunity to take on a substantial interaction design task and see it through to its final resolution. Students propose a topic to be carried out over at least one year. Key milestones in this project include: survey & research; filed studies; problem framing; ideation & conceptualization; design synthesis; and critical thinking. The final submission is presented in a public exhibition.

LID803 Independent study project 6 Credits
The independent study project provides students with the opportunity to identify an interaction design problem of relevance to their professional experience and interest and to formulate possible solutions grounded in researching relevant published work and in their own action research in the form of practical outcomes.

ELECTIVES

LID603 Introduction to interaction design 3(2-2-5)
An introduction to current concepts, methods, and technologies employed in the design of interactive media. Subjects of study include defining user and environmental requirements, managing information complexity, prototyping and designing interfaces that are usable and testable.

LID604 Collaborative environments design 3(2-2-5)
This subject looks at how technology has been developed to support collaborative experiences; from the conference call to full-on virtual reality environments; from simple games to Collaborative Management Systems. Students engage in practical research as well as investigate some of the more theoretical aspects of this subject.

LID703 Building interactive media 3(2-2-5)
This course focuses on considering the computer as medium. Students are introduced to software programming techniques to produce simple on-screen interactive visual-audio work. Students are set tasks to show that they have fully understood the basic principles and mastered the technical aspects of interactivity.

LID704 Advanced website design 3(2-2-5)
This course reviews advanced techniques in developing websites using server technologies, database technologies, interactivity, and CMS to build effective websites; this course focuses on experimental approaches as well as the fundamentals of engineering and coding robust web sites.

LID605 Introduction to computing in design 3(2-2-5)
This digital studio/seminar course introduces fundamentals of computing that are important for designing digital media. Initially, basic concepts of the computing environment such as display technologies, input/output devices, networks, and software are introduced. No prior programming experience is required.

LID606 Approaches to communication design 3(2-2-5)
This course examines the methods and principles of graphic language, semiotics, and other disciplines that help to explain the relationship between words and images and provide important themes to guide the practice of communication design.

LID705 Visualising complex information 3(2-2-5)
This course explores visualizing the content and structure of complex data; the effective integration of words, images, sound and motion to communicate complex information. Students explore the differences between static paper-based methods and dynamic digitally-based methods of visualisation.

LID706 People, places and things 3(2-2-5)
This workshop looks at taking multimedia off the screen by investigating the manipulation of simple electronics (inputs / outputs) to create interactive objects and spaces as a means of communication.
