New from August 2012: B.A. in International Business Communication
In recent years there has been a complete revolution in how we communicate and how business is done. This has led to conventional thinking becoming dated or even redundant. With the increasing internationalization of business, there has developed a need for a new kind of business thinker, leader and communicator who can operate across a variety of challenges in a short space of time. The BA in International Business Communication is aimed at providing a platform for this kind of person.
The BA in International Business Communication, which is taught in English, is designed to give students the creative, analytical and technological tools combined with a broad solid background in both business and communication that they cannot get from traditional business or communication programmes. These are the skills that will be needed to respond to the ever changing and unpredictable multi-dimensional challenges of working in business and its myriad of related fields in an increasingly international context. The BA in International Business Communication is designed to give a skillset that will remain valid even with future changes in practice and technology. |

Asian U meets Mr. Condom
31.01.2012: Headed by Dr. Viphandh Roengpithya, Founder and President of Asian University, a delegation of lecturers and a group of visiting students from South Korea followed the invitation to visit the Mechai Viravaidja Foundation. Khun Mechai is better known as ‘Mr. Condom’ due to his successful efforts to reduce poverty by reducing the birth rate in Thailand single-handedly.
For his efforts in various development endeavors, Khun Mechai has been acclaimed with numerous awards, recognition, and honorary doctoral degrees as well as the United Nations Gold Peace Medal (1981), the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Public Service (1994), one of Asiaweek’s “20 Great Asians” (1995), the United Nations Population Award (1997), and one of TIME Magazine’s “Asian Heroes” (2006). Mechai and PDA have recently been the recipient of the Bill and Melinda Gates Award for Global Health in 2007, the Skoll Awardees for Social Entrepreneurship in 2008, and the Prince Mahidol Award for Public Health in 2009.
Khun Mechai promotes a grass-root business that requires 1 rai (1,600 sqm) of land of any soil to grow several plants in concrete rings and plastic bags, such as out-of-season lemon and cantaloupe. This way, the grass-roots farmer will earn about 240,000 baht in the first year, and about 360,000 baht any subsequent year.
An example project is installed on the ground of Birds & Bees, the famous hotel in Phratamnak Soi 4, which also hosts the restaurant Cabbages & Condoms which provided a tasty lunch for the visitors from Asian University.
The Asian U President offered to make use of the Asian U campus to help promote this surprisingly simple and effective approach.
Later that day, the Asian U delegation visited 2 rural public schools near Sriracha where the 1-rai solution is about to be implemented.

Introduction to Innovation Teams at Satit Bangna School
On 23 January 2012, Aj. Freek Olaf de Groot (Head of M.Ed. TESOL), Aj. Ulrich Werner (Director of International Development), and Aj. Nipone Sirinuntananon (Lecturer and Assistant of International Development) visited Satit Bangna School to present the Asian U concept on Innovation Teams for the in-service teacher development.
Prof. Dr. Aree Sunhachawee, Principle of Satit Bangna, Ms. Nadrudee Chitrangsan (Deputy Director of Administration), Ms. Angela (English Consultant), Ms. Lilibeth (School Coordinator), and Mr. Thiha Win (Education Coordinator), discussed the Asian U concept thoroughly. It focuses on building innovation teams in each educational field at any school. Asian U takes care of the small innovation teams, which in turn act as an interface to educational development within their school and a communication channel to scientific analysis and support to Asian U.
This way, only a few teachers need to attend meetings and courses, but have a strong multiplying effect. Besides, the innovation teams at participating schools are connected to each other in order to learn from experiences and new ideas on educational development born in the participating schools.
Since the innovation team-building programme is a means of sustainable development for Thai schools, rather than being a 'product', close collaboration between all participants is necessary. Satit Bangna School is obviously ready for active participation in educational development, and all educators in the meeting agreed that the Asian U programme is a promising way to develop long-lasting solutions bottom up.
Aj. Ulrich Werner was invited to hand over the certificates for Satit Bangna's best students, who also took the chance to listen to the presentation of the innovation team programme.
The meeting was arranged by Aj. Thiha Win, a former student of Aj. Ulrich Werner, who now works on quality and skills development within Satit Bangna School.
