Ridley Scott's Gladiator is the epic struggle for justice, the epitome of valour, and the reason behind the existence of mankind. This fulfilling tragedy takes place in the combat arenas and the Coliseum of Ancient Rome. Stepping back in time, we are taken aback by the atrocities committed by the Romans at that period and also by the tyrannical rule of their vicious emperors.

The Roman general Maximus, played by Russell Crowe, is the true hero in this story. After being forced into slavery by the corrupt heir to the thrown, general Maximus becomes the greatest gladiator to ever walk the earth. His prowess in the arena will eventually lead him to Rome where he will battle it out with his sworn enemy, the Emperor, played by Joaquin Phoenix. Crowe's acting abilities have ranged from playing the ultra-violent villain in Virtuosity (1994) to now besting the part of the hero in Gladiator.

The historical settings of Ancient Roman and the Coliseum provide a compelling and vibrant backdrop to the story, allowing us to go back in time and see the heroic actions of the gladiators. The special effects providing these scenes had never served a movie so well. The setting additionally serves an academic purpose through allowing us to relive the hardships of the Roman Empire.

This perilous, historical journey through Rome is reserved for those of the adventurous elite. So if you think you are valiant enough, journey out to watch Gladiator and you will be transformed from man to warrior!
