FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Application

Question: How should I apply for the M.Ed. programme in TESOL?
Answer: You can download an application form from the university’s website and send the completed form to Admissions by email.  The application fee is $20, but if sending it presents a problem, the fee can be sent or given at a later date.

Question: What is the deadline for application?
Answer: The programme starts on the 20th August 2007.  If applicants have met all entrance requirements, they may complete registration over the weekend preceding the start of their programme.

English Language Proficiency

Question: If my English is not up to IELTS 6.0, what help can Asian U provide?
Answer: Asian U has an English Immersion Programme (EIP), which provides 25 hours of class contact time per week.  The programme runs during the university’s regular semesters (late August – early December = 15 weeks, early January – late April = 15 weeks, early June – early/mid August = 10 weeks) and is divided into five-week modules.  In order to upgrade by IELTS 0.5, it is usually necessary to study for at least 10 weeks.  When students complete their programme, they may, if appropriate and requested, take a test which will give them an equivalent IELTS score which is valid within the university (see next question/answer).  To see how much the EIP costs, please refer to the university website.

Question: Does Asian U have an English language test that can provide an IELTS score?
Answer: Yes, Asian U has Level Assessment tests and internal English language Proficiency tests that can provide an IELTS score.  The IELTS score is recognized by the university and by some other institutions, organizations and companies, but it does not have world-wide validity and is not a substitute for the ‘real’ accredited IELTS.

Teaching Experience

Question: Is teaching experience a compulsory requirement?
Answer: Although at least one year of teaching experience is recommended, it is not absolutely necessary.  If applicants do not have any teaching experience, we would like them to do an accredited 4-week intensive certificate course, which is available in a number of centres world-wide.  The one recommended is run at TEFL International in Rayong Province, Thailand, not far from Asian University (for further information see below). Another option is to apply for a Teacher’s Assistant (TA) post at The College at Asian University for at least 1 semester. This would provide secondary school experience including limited experience of teaching under the supervision of English language teachers at The College within an English-speaking environment.

4-Month Certificate Courses

Question: What are the dates of the certificate courses at TEFL International in Ban Phe, Rayong?
Answer: Courses usually start on the first Monday of every month throughout the year.

Question: Where does TEFL International run certificate courses in Thailand other than in Ban Phe?
Answer: Certificate courses are also run in Phuket.  Self-access PELT courses are also run in Bangkok and Pattaya.

Question: How can I contact TEFL International if I want to make further enquires (for example, about the cost of the certificate course)?
Answer: Please email Mr Bruce Veldhuisen: <bruce@teflintl.com>

Question: If it is not possible or convenient to join a TEFL International 4-week certificate course, what other intensive certificate courses are recommended?
Answer: We recommend any CELTA course at ECC.  Ideal and International House certificate courses are also recognized.

Duration of Programme

Question: What is the duration of the M.Ed in TESOL programme?
Answer: The programme can be completed within one academic year by full-time students and within two academic years by part-time students.

Cost

Question: How much is the academic fee for the M.Ed. in TESOL?
Answer: At a cost of 9,500 Baht per credit, the full academic fee for the M.Ed. in TESOL (@ 42 credits) is 399,000 Baht. The academic fee for the Foundation Programme is 75,000 Baht.

Question: Is the university offering any bursaries or scholarships?
Answer: Scholarships are available. For current details, please visit the university website.

Accommodation

Question: What accommodation is available?
Answer: 90% of undergraduate students stay on campus in dormitory accommodation with two students sharing a room.  Each room is well furnished, is air-conditioned, has Internet access and an en suite shower room.  Many graduate students prefer to live outside in Pattaya, Jomtien or other surrounding areas.  Dormitory accommodation is 30,000 Baht per semester.  For M.Ed. students, this will amount to 90,000 Baht over 3 semesters.  Suitable local accommodation is not difficult to find and varies from around 5,000 to 10,000+ Baht per month depending on size, location, etc.

Visas

Questions: What are visa requirements?
Answer: Although visa requirements may vary from country to country, generally student applicants are requested to enter Thailand with a non-immigrant ‘ED’ visa. This may be obtained on receipt of an official letter of acceptance from the university’s Admissions Office. This letter is normally issued to applicants after the tuition fee has been paid.

In cases where student applicants are unable to obtain a non-immigrant ‘ED’ visa, the university will enable them to change an ordinary tourist visa to a student visa at the relevant immigration offices in Thailand.

If any further information on visas is required, please contact the university’s Registration Office.
